Changes to IRA distributions after the SECURE act

| January 08, 2020

The new SECURE Act included changed to how inherited IRAs much be distributed, resulting in accelerated distributions (and larger annual tax bills each year) and less control over how and when to take money out of an IRA for many beneficiaries. Almost every beneficiary expect spouses will feel a negative impact of these changes. See the graphic by Michael Kitces for an overview of the changes. There additional estate planning strategies coupled with intentional tax management of these accounts will mute the impacts.
